Project Overview
Lance Power was commissioned to supply a diesel backup generator for a large private residential property on the Isle of Man. The project was delivered via the YESSS Electrical Isle of Man branch, working closely in association with the YESSS Renewables team to support a wider renewable energy solution already installed on site.
The client required a reliable standby power system that would integrate seamlessly with existing solar panels and battery storage, providing reassurance during power outages.
The Challenge
The residential property was designed around a hybrid renewable energy system, incorporating solar generation and battery storage. However, during prolonged power outages or periods of low renewable generation, there was a requirement for a diesel generator to act as a dependable backup source and top up the batteries when required.
A key challenge was that the generator needed to be installed within an existing plant building, requiring careful consideration of exhaust routing, ventilation, and compliance with best practice for enclosed generator installations.
The Solution
Lance Power supplied a 40 kVA diesel generator, selected for its reliability, compact design, and suitability for residential standby applications.
To meet the site’s operational and environmental requirements, the generator specification included:
A water jacket heater (JWH) for reliable cold-start performance
An extended twin-walled stainless steel exhaust system
Additional sockets for auxiliary power use
The generator was designed to operate as an integral part of the renewable power system, ensuring continuity of supply when solar and battery capacity alone were insufficient.
Installation & Commissioning
The generator installation was completed by local engineers, working in close coordination with the YESSS Renewables team. Due to the generator being housed within a plant building, Lance Power designed a bespoke extended exhaust flue system to safely route exhaust gases externally while maintaining efficient operation.
To support the project and ensure a smooth handover, Lance Power dispatched an engineer to the Isle of Man to work directly alongside the YESSS Renewables team on-site. Our engineer oversaw the final integration of the generator with the existing battery storage and solar systems, while also carrying out full testing and commissioning to ensure the entire hybrid power solution operated seamlessly from day one.The installation and commissioning process was completed without issue, ensuring the system was fully operational and compliant from day one.
The Result
The diesel generator now operates as a critical component of a fully integrated renewable energy solution, providing reliable backup power and additional resilience during grid outages. The system delivers peace of mind to the homeowner while maximising the effectiveness of the existing solar and battery installation.
Both the end user and the YESSS Electrical and Renewables teams reported being extremely satisfied with the final result, highlighting the smooth collaboration, technical support, and overall performance of the generator system.
