UK Home Backup Generators: What Every Homeowner Needs to Know

A UK home backup generator eliminates that uncertainty. But with so many options on the market, knowing where to start can be overwhelming.

Power cuts in the UK are more common than most people expect. Whether caused by severe weather, ageing grid infrastructure, or localised faults, an unplanned outage can leave your home without heating, refrigeration, lighting, or critical medical equipment, sometimes for hours, sometimes for days.

A home backup generator eliminates that uncertainty. But with so many options on the market, knowing where to start can be overwhelming. We are a specialist generator supplier and installation company based in Yorkshire. Here’s everything you need to know.

What Is a Home Backup Generator?

A home backup generator is a power source that supplies electricity to your property when mains power fails. It can range from a small portable petrol unit that powers a few appliances, through to a permanently installed automatic standby system that restores power to your entire home within seconds of an outage, without you needing to do anything at all.

The right solution depends on your power requirements, how often your area experiences outages, and your budget.

  1. Portable Generators

Portable generators are the most affordable entry point. They run on petrol or diesel, are started manually, and can be connected to individual appliances via extension leads or through a manual transfer switch.

They are well suited to homeowners who experience occasional short outages and need to keep essentials running, a fridge, some lighting, phone charging, and a fan or electric blanket. Most portable units in the 3kVA to 8kVA range are capable of covering these basics comfortably.

The main limitations are convenience and safety. A portable generator must be stored, refuelled, and started by hand. It must never be run indoors or in an enclosed space due to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. And it will not start itself at 3am when a storm takes out your local substation.

  1. Standby Generators

A standby generator is permanently installed outside your home, connected directly to your distribution board via an automatic transfer switch (ATS). When mains power is lost, the ATS detects the failure and starts the generator automatically, typically within 10 to 30 seconds. When utility power is restored, it transfers back and shuts the generator down.

Standby units are most commonly powered by diesel or natural gas. Diesel standby generators are well established in UK residential and light commercial applications. Natural gas units are an increasingly popular alternative where a mains gas supply is available, as they remove the need for on-site fuel storage.

For homeowners with medical equipment dependencies, those who work from home, or anyone in an area with a history of prolonged outages, a standby generator is the correct solution. It offers complete, automatic protection with no manual intervention required.

  1. Sizing Your Home Generator Correctly

Getting the size right is one of the most important decisions in the process. An undersized generator will overload and shut down; an oversized one wastes capital and running costs.

The starting point is a load assessment, a calculation of which circuits you need to power and what their combined running and starting demands are. Motor-driven equipment such as heat pumps, refrigerators, and sump pumps require a short but significant surge of power on start-up, often two to three times their running wattage. This must be factored into the sizing calculation.

As a general guide for UK homes:

  • 5-8 kVA covers essentials: fridge, lighting, phone and device charging, and a television

  • 10-14 kVA adds heating or cooling, a sump pump, and a home office

  • 16-22 kVA provides whole-house coverage for a typical UK property

  • 22 kVA and above is suited to larger homes or properties with high-demand equipment

We carry out full site assessments and load calculations as part of every home generator project, ensuring you are not under- or over-specified.

  1. Installation and Compliance

Home generator installation in the UK is not a DIY project. It involves connection to your property’s distribution board, earthing to BS 7671 standards, and in many cases a gas supply connection, all of which must be carried out by qualified engineers.

An automatic transfer switch must be installed correctly to prevent back-feeding power into the public grid. Which is both illegal and potentially fatal to utility workers responding to the outage.

Planning permission is not usually required for a residential standby generator in the UK. As most installations fall within permitted development rights. However, placement must comply with manufacturer clearance requirements and any relevant local guidelines, particularly in conservation areas.

All installations we carry out are completed by qualified engineers, documented with records, and compliant with current UK electrical standards.

  1. Ongoing Maintenance

A generator that has not been maintained is not a reliable backup. Standby units should be serviced annually, with oil and filter changes, battery condition checks, coolant inspections on liquid-cooled models and a full functional test under load.

Most modern standby generators include a weekly self-exercise mode. Running the engine briefly to keep seals lubricated and flag any faults before they become failures. This does not replace a professional annual service, but it ensures the unit stays ready between visits.

We offer service and maintenance contracts for residential standby generators across the UK. Giving homeowners confidence that their system will perform when it matters.

Is a Home Backup Generator Worth It?

For most homeowners who have asked the question, the answer is yes. A single extended power cut, a frozen water pipe, a flooded basement, spoiled medication, or a missed deadline, can cost considerably more than the price of a reliable backup solution.

A standby generator also adds measurable value to a property and, for homes where power continuity is a medical necessity, it is simply not optional.

If you are considering a home backup generator and would like the right solution for your property, contact our team. We supply, install, commission, and service generator systems across the UK, with no-obligation site assessments available.
