Project Overview

Lance Power, in conjunction with YESSS Electrical, were selected to support the delivery of a highly bespoke 250kVA standby power solution. This was part of a major facilities and electrical infrastructure upgrade at a critical national infrastructure site.

The project required a life-safety generator capable of providing reliable backup power in the event of a mains failure. This is to ensure essential operations could continue uninterrupted. Given the importance of the facility, the solution needed to meet stringent performance, safety, and environmental requirements. While integrating seamlessly with the wider site infrastructure.

The Solution

To meet the site’s demanding requirements, we supplied a highly customised 250kVA diesel generator package.

The installation included a 5,000-litre bulk fuel system complete with leak detection, automated fuel transfer, and fuel polishing capabilities. The generator was also engineered to operate at exceptionally low noise levels, achieving just 60 dBA at one metre. This is achieved through the use of enhanced acoustic attenuation.

Safety was another key consideration. The package incorporated an automated fire suppression system within the canopy. This was alongside fuel shut-off measures designed to prevent continued fuel flow in the event of an emergency. To support long-term maintenance and operational resilience, a bespoke connection cabinet was installed, allowing a temporary generator to be connected during servicing periods while also providing a dedicated connection point for annual load bank testing.

Due to the generator’s location on site, a custom 14-metre twin-wall stainless steel exhaust system was designed and installed to meet both operational requirements and building regulations. The project was completed with the installation of two ABB motorised Automatic Transfer Switch panels, ensuring seamless transfer between mains and standby power.

Overcoming Site Challenges

Working within a highly secure environment required careful planning and coordination throughout the project. As the site forms part of the UK’s critical infrastructure network, all works had to be carried out to a strict schedule with limited flexibility.

Despite delays caused by external factors and adverse weather conditions, our team, working closely alongside YESSS Electrical and the client, adapted to changing circumstances. Successfully maintained the programme through structured planning and close collaboration with all parties involved.

Installation & Commissioning

Installation and commissioning progressed smoothly, with multiple site visits, Factory Acceptance Testing, blackout testing, and operator training all completed successfully.

Careful preparation and communication throughout the project ensured the system was commissioned efficiently and met all required performance standards.

The Outcome

The completed standby power system now provides critical resilience for a key national infrastructure facility.

Working alongside UPS systems supplied by other project partners, the generator helps ensure uninterrupted power availability for essential operations. Supporting infrastructure that plays a vital role in services across the United Kingdom.

The project has delivered a reliable, compliant, and future-proof backup power solution that will continue to support the site’s operations for years to come.

Customer Feedback

Although the project has not yet reached final handover, feedback received from the project team and principal contractors has been extremely positive.
