When specifying a diesel generator, one of the first decisions you’ll need to make is whether an open set generator or a soundproof generator is the best fit for your application. While both provide reliable standby power and prime power, they are designed for different installation environments, noise requirements and operational demands. Choosing the right generator from the outset can improve performance, reduce installation costs and ensure compliance with site-specific regulations.
What Is an Open Set Generator?
An open set generator consists of the diesel engine, alternator and control panel mounted on a heavy-duty steel base frame without an acoustic enclosure. Unlike enclosed models, the internal components are fully accessible, making routine servicing, maintenance and inspections quicker and more convenient.
Open set diesel generators are typically installed inside plant rooms, dedicated generator buildings, energy centres or bespoke containers where the building itself provides weather protection and acoustic attenuation. They are a popular choice for industrial applications, manufacturing facilities, power stations, data centres and utility infrastructure where noise is not a primary concern.
One of the main advantages of an open set generator is its flexibility. They can be integrated into bespoke generator packages, connected to custom exhaust systems and ventilation layouts, and paired with bulk fuel storage systems. They are also often a more cost-effective solution than enclosed generators, particularly when an acoustic canopy is unnecessary.
What Is a Soundproof Generator?
A soundproof generator, also referred to as a silent generator, silent diesel generator or acoustic generator, is housed within a weatherproof, sound-attenuated canopy. The enclosure is specifically engineered to reduce engine and cooling fan noise while protecting the generator from rain, wind, dust and other environmental conditions.
These generators are designed for outdoor installation and are widely used in locations where noise control is essential. Typical applications include commercial buildings, residential developments, hospitals, healthcare facilities, schools, hotels, offices, retail parks, construction sites and public sector projects.
Modern soundproof generators feature acoustic insulation, high-performance residential silencers, weather-resistant powder-coated canopies and lockable access doors, allowing maintenance to be carried out without compromising security or durability. They offer an excellent balance of low noise levels, reliability and ease of installation.
Open Set vs Soundproof Generator: Key Differences
The biggest difference between an open set generator and a soundproof generator is the level of noise reduction and environmental protection they provide.
Open set generators are best suited to indoor installations where the building already provides sufficient acoustic control and weather protection. They generally have a lower purchase cost, easier service access and greater flexibility for bespoke installations.
Soundproof generators, on the other hand, are specifically designed for outdoor use and noise-sensitive environments. Their acoustic canopies significantly reduce operating noise while protecting the generator from the elements, making them ideal for projects where planning conditions or local regulations impose strict noise limits.
Which Generator Should You Choose?
The right generator depends on your project’s location, operating environment and performance requirements.
If your diesel generator will be installed inside a plant room or purpose-built generator enclosure with appropriate ventilation and acoustic treatment, an open set generator is often the most practical and economical choice. It provides excellent accessibility for servicing while delivering dependable standby or prime power.
If your generator needs to be installed outdoors or close to residential properties, offices, schools or healthcare facilities, a soundproof diesel generator is typically the preferred option. The acoustic canopy helps minimise disturbance while protecting the generator from harsh weather conditions, ensuring reliable operation throughout the year.
Other factors such as available installation space, maintenance access, fuel storage requirements, emission standards and long-term operating costs should also be considered when selecting a generator.
